35 men can complete a piece of work in 16 days and 20 women can complete the same piece of work in 30 days. What is the ratio of the amount of work done by 40 men in 1 day to the amount of work done by 15 women in 1 day?

For men,

$M_{1} D_{1}=M_{2} D_{2}$

$\Rightarrow 35 \times 16=40 \times D_{2}$

$\Rightarrow D_{2}=\frac{35 \times 16}{40}=14$ days

$\therefore 40$ men’s 1 day’s work $=\frac{1}{14}$

For women,

$M_{1} D_{1}=M_{2} D_{2}$

$\Rightarrow 20 \times 30=15 \times D_{2}$

$\Rightarrow D_{2}=\frac{20 \times 30}{15}=40$ days

$\therefore 15$ women’s 1 day’s work $=\frac{1}{40}$

$\therefore$ Required ratio $=\frac{1}{14}: \frac{1}{40}$ $=40: 14=20: 7$
