Equations And Inequations Ques 90

I. $2 x^{2}+19 x+42=0$

II. $y^{2}+9 y+20=0$

Directions : In the following questions, two equations numbered I and II are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answe If

(1) $x<y$

(2) $x>y$

(3) $x \leq y$

(4) $x \geq y$

(5) $x=y$ or the relationship cannot be established

Show Answer

Correct Answer: 90.(5)

Solution: (5) I. $2 x^{2}+19 x+42=0$

$\Rightarrow 2 x^{2}+12 x+7 x+42=0$

$\Rightarrow 2 x(x+6)+7(x+6)=0$

$\Rightarrow(x+6)(2 x+7)=0$

$\Rightarrow x=-6$ or, $-\frac{7}{2}$

II. $y^{2}+9 y+20=0$

$\Rightarrow y^{2}+4 y+5 y+20=0$

$\Rightarrow y(y+4)+5(y+4)=0$

$\Rightarrow(y+4)(y+5)=0$

$\Rightarrow y=-4$ or, -5
