Equations And Inequations Ques 8

I. $3 x^{2}-22 x+40=0$

II. $5 y^{2}-21 y+16=0$

Directions : In the following questions two equations numbered I and II are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answer

(1) if $x>y$

(2) if $x \geq y$

(3) if $x<y$

(4) if $x \leq y$

(5) if $x=y$ or the relationship between $x$ and $y$ cannot be established.

Show Answer

Correct Answer: 8.(1)

Solution: (1) I. $3 x^{2}-22 x+40=0$

$\Rightarrow 3 x^{2}-12 x-10 x+40=0$

$\Rightarrow 3 x(x-4)-10(x-4)=0$

$\Rightarrow(x-4)(3 x-10)=0$

$\Rightarrow x=4$ or, $\frac{10}{3}=3 \frac{1}{3}$ II. $5 y^{2}-21 y+16=0$

$\Rightarrow 5 y^{2}-5 y-16 y+16=0$

$\Rightarrow 5 y(y-1)-16(y-1)=0$

$\Rightarrow(y-1)(5 y-16)=0$

$\Rightarrow y=1$ or, $\frac{16}{5}=3 \frac{1}{5}$

Clearly, $x>y$
