Equations And Inequations Ques 70
I. $3 x^{2}-10 x+8=0$
II. $y^{2}-5 y+6=0$
Directions : In each of the following questions, two equations numbered I and II are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answer
(1) if $x \geq y$
(2) if $x \leq y$
(3) if $x>y$
(4) if $x<y$
(5) if relationship between $x$ and $y$ cannot be established

Correct Answer: 70.(2)
Solution: (2) I. $3 x^{2}-10 x+8=0$
$\Rightarrow 3 x^{2}-6 x-4 x+8=0$
$\Rightarrow 3 x(x-2)-4(x-2)=0$
$\Rightarrow(3 x-4)(x-2)=6$
$\Rightarrow x=\frac{4}{3}$ or $x=2$
II. $y^{2}-5 y+6=0$
$\Rightarrow y^{2}-3 y-2 y+6=0$
$\Rightarrow y(y-3)-2(y-3)=0$
$\Rightarrow(y-3)(y-2)=0$
$\Rightarrow y=3$ or $2$
Clearly, $x \leq y$
