Equations And Inequations Ques 7

I. $x^{2}-4 x-12=0$

II. $y^{2}-5 y-14=0$

Directions: In the following questions two equations numbered I and II are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answer

(1) if $x>y$

(2) if $x \geq y$

(3) if $x<y$

(4) if $x \leq y$

(5) if $x=y$ or the relationship between $x$ and $y$ is not determinable.

Correct Answer: 7.(5)

Solution: (5)

Clearly, $x \geq y$ I. $x^{2}-4 x-12=0$

$\Rightarrow x^{2}-6 x+2 x-12=0$

$\Rightarrow x(x-6)+2(x-6)=0$

$\Rightarrow(x+2)(x-6)=0$

$\Rightarrow x=-2$ or $6$

II. $y^{2}-5 y-14=0$

$\Rightarrow y^{2}-7 y+2 y-14=0$

$\Rightarrow y(y-7)+2(y-7)=0$

$\Rightarrow(y-7)(y+2)=0$

$\Rightarrow y=7$ or $-2$
