Directions : In each of these questions, two equations (I) and (II) are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answer
(1) if $x>y$
(2) if $x \geq y$
(3) if $x<y$
(4) if $x \leq y$
(5) if $x=y$ or relationship between $x$ and $y$ cannot be established.

Solution: (5) I. $2 x^{2}-17 x+36=0$
$\Rightarrow 2 x^{2}-8 x-9 x+36=0$
$\Rightarrow 2 x(x-4)-9(x-4)=0$
$\Rightarrow(2 x-9)(x-4)=0$
$\Rightarrow x=\frac{9}{2}$ or 4
II. $2 y^{2}-19 y+44=0$
$\Rightarrow 2 y^{2}-8 y-11 y+44=0$
$\Rightarrow 2 y(y-4)-11(y-4)=0$
$\Rightarrow(2 y-11)(y-4)=0$
$\Rightarrow y=\frac{11}{2}$ or 4
Clearly, $x \leq y$
