Equations And Inequations Ques 191
I. $3 x^{2}-13 x+14=0$
II. $3 y^{2}-17 y+22=0$
Directions : In each of the following questions, two equations numbered I and II are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answer
(1) if $\quad x \geq y$
(2) if $x \leq y$
(3) if $x>y$
(4) if $x<y$
(5) if $x=y \quad$ or relationship between $x$ and $y$ cannot be established

Correct Answer: 191.(2)
Solution: (2) I. $3 x^{2}-13 x+14=0$
$\Rightarrow 3 x^{2}-6 x-7 x+14=0$
$\Rightarrow 3 x(x-2)-7(x-2)=0$
$\Rightarrow(x-2)(3 x-7)=0$
$\Rightarrow x=2$ or $\frac{7}{3}$
II. $3 y^{2}-17 y+22=0$
$\Rightarrow 3 y^{2}-6 y-11 y+22=0$
$\Rightarrow 3 y(y-2)-11(y-2)=0$
$\Rightarrow(y-2)(3 y-11)=0$
$\Rightarrow y=2$ or $\frac{11}{3}$
Clearly, $y \leq x$
