Equations And Inequations Ques 178

I. $x^{2}+3 x-28=0$

II. $y^{2}-y-20=0$

Directions : In the following questions, two equations I and II have been given. You have to solve both equations and give answer if

(1) $x>y$

(2) $x \geq y$

(3) $x<y$

(4) $x \leq y$

(5) $x=y$ or the relation cannot be established.

Correct Answer: 178.(5)

Solution: (5) I. $x^{2}+3 x-28=0$

$\Rightarrow x^{2}+7 x-4 x-28=0$

$\Rightarrow x(x+7)-4(x+7)=0$

$\Rightarrow(x-4)(x+7)=0$

$\Rightarrow x=4$ or -7

II. $y^{2}-y-20=0$

$\Rightarrow y^{2}-5 y+4 y-20=0$

$\Rightarrow y(y-5)+4(y-5)=0$

$\Rightarrow(y+4)(y-5)=0$

$\Rightarrow y=-4$ or 5
