Equations And Inequations Ques 168

I. $4 x^{2}+11 x+6=0$

II. $2 y^{2}+11 y+15=0$

Directions : In each of the following questions two equations I and II have been given. You have to solve both the equations and give answer

(1) if $x>y$

(2) if $x \geq y$

(3) if $x<y$

(4) if $x \leq y$

(5) if $x=y$ or relationship cannot be established between them

Correct Answer: (1)

Solution: (1) I. $4 x^{2}+11 x+6=0$

$\Rightarrow 4 x^{2}+8 x+3 x+6=0$

$\Rightarrow 4 x(x+2)+3(x+2)=0$

$\Rightarrow(x+2)(4 x+3)=0$

$\Rightarrow x=-2$ or $\frac{-3}{4}$

II. $2 y^{2}+11 y+15=0$

$\Rightarrow 2 y^{2}+6 y+5 y+15=0$

$\Rightarrow 2 y(y+3)+5(y+3)=0$

$\Rightarrow(2 y+5)(y+3)=0$

$\therefore y=\frac{-5}{2}$ or -3

Clearly, $x>y$
