Equations And Inequations Ques 167
I. $x^{2}-4 x-21=0$
II. $y^{2}-4 y-32=0$
Directions : In each of the following questions two equations I and II have been given. You have to solve both the equations and give answer
(1) if $x>y$
(2) if $x \geq y$
(3) if $x<y$
(4) if $x \leq y$
(5) if $x=y$ or relationship cannot be established between them

Correct Answer: (5)
Solution: (5) I. $x^{2}-4 x-21=0$
$\Rightarrow x^{2}-7 x+3 x-21=0$
$\Rightarrow x(x-7)+3(x-7)=0$
$\Rightarrow(x+3)(x-7)=0$
$\Rightarrow x=-3$ or 7
II. $y^{2}-4 y-32=0$
$\Rightarrow y^{2}-8 y+4 y-32=0$
$\Rightarrow y(y-8)+4(y-8)=0$
$\Rightarrow(y+4)(y-8)=0$
$\therefore y=-4$ or 8
