Equations And Inequations Ques 161

I. $4 x^{2}+20 x+21=0$

II. $2 y^{2}+17 y+35=0$

Directions : In the following questions, two equations I and II have been given. You have to solve both equations and give answer if

(1) $x>y$

(2) $x \geq y$

(3) $x<y$

(4) $x \leq y$

(5) $x=y$ or the relation cannot be established.

Correct Answer: (2)

Solution: (2) I. $4 x^{2}+20 x+21=0$

$\Rightarrow 4 x^{2}+14 x+6 x+21=0$

$\Rightarrow 2 x(2 x+7)+3(2 x+7)=0$

$\Rightarrow(2 x+7)(2 x+3)=0$

$\Rightarrow x=-\frac{7}{2}$ or $-\frac{3}{2}$

II. $2 y^{2}+17 y+35=0$

$\Rightarrow 2 y^{2}+10 y+7 y+35=0$

$\Rightarrow 2 y(y+5)+7(y+5)=0$

$\Rightarrow(y+5)(2 y+7)=0$

$\Rightarrow y=-5$ or $-\frac{7}{2}$

Clearly, $x \geq y$
