A mixture of milk and water in a jar comprises 12 litre of milk. If 5 litre of pure milk and 3 litre of pure water were added to this jar, the percentage of water in the new mixture would be $20 \%$. What was the initial quantity of water in the jar? (in litre)

Let the quantity of water in the original mixture be $x$ litres.
According to the question,
$\frac{x+3}{17+x+3}=\frac{20}{100}$
$\Rightarrow \frac{x+3}{20+x}=\frac{1}{5}$
$\Rightarrow 5 x+15=20+x$
$\Rightarrow 5 x-x=20-15$
$\Rightarrow 4 x=5 $
$\Rightarrow x=\frac{5}{4}=1.25$ litres
