If sum of smaller number $x$ and two times the other number is equal to the sum of two times the smaller number and 16 . The difference between the numbers is 6 . Find the smaller number.

Let the numbers be $x$ and $x+6$.
$\therefore x+2(x+6)=2 x+16$
$\Rightarrow x+2 x+12=2 x+16$
$\Rightarrow x=16-12=4$
