- A train travelling at $72$ $ kmph$ crosses a platform in 30 seconds and a man standing on the platform in 18 seconds. What is the length of the platform? (in metres)

Solution: 31. (1) Speed of train $=72 $ $\mathrm{kmph}$
$=\left(\frac{72 \times 5}{18}\right) \mathrm{m} / \mathrm{sec}=20 $ $\mathrm{m} / \mathrm{sec}$
$\because$ The train crosses a man standing on the platform in 18 seconds.
$\therefore$ Length of train $=18 \times 20$
$=360$ metre
If the length of platform be $x$ metre, then $\frac{x+360}{30}=20$
$\Rightarrow x+360=600$
$\Rightarrow x=600-360=240$ metre
