Equations And Inequations Ques 89
I. $2 x^{2}-17 x+36=0$
II. $y^{2}-7 y+12=0$
Directions : In the following questions, two equations numbered I and II are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answe If
(1) $x<y$
(2) $x>y$
(3) $x \leq y$
(4) $x \geq y$
(5) $x=y$ or the relationship cannot be established
Show Answer
Correct Answer: 89.(4)
Solution: (4) I. $2 x^{2}-17 x+36=0$
$\Rightarrow 2 x^{2}-8 x-9 x+36=0$
$\Rightarrow 2 x(x-4)-9(x-4)=0$
$\Rightarrow(x-4)(2 x-9)=0$
$\Rightarrow x=4$ or, $\frac{9}{2}$
II. $y^{2}-7 y+12=0$
$\Rightarrow y^{2}-3 y-4 y+12=0$
$\Rightarrow y(y-3)-4(y-3)=0$
$\Rightarrow(y-3)(y-4)=0$
$\Rightarrow y=3$ or, 4
Clearly, $x \geq y$
