Equations And Inequations Ques 40

I. $3 x^{2}+5 x+2=0$

II. $3 y^{2}+18 y+24=0$

Directions: In each of these questions, two equations (I) and (II) are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answer

(1) if $x>y$

(2) if $x \geq y$

(3) if $x<y$

(4) if $x \leq y$

(5) if $x=y$ or the relationship between $x$ and $y$ cannot be established.

Correct Answer: 40.(1)

Solution: (1) I. $3x^{2}+5x+2=0$

$\Rightarrow 3 x^{2}+3 x+2 x+2=0$

$\Rightarrow 3 x(x+1)+2(x+1)=0$

$\Rightarrow(3 x+2)(x+1)=0$

$\Rightarrow x=-\frac{2}{3}$ or -1 II. $3 y^{2}+18 y+24=0$

$\Rightarrow y^{2}+6 y+8=0$

$\Rightarrow y^{2}+4 y+2 y+8=0$

$\Rightarrow y(y+4)+2(y+4)=0$

$\Rightarrow(y+2)(y+4)=0$

$\Rightarrow y=-2$ or -4

Clearly, $x>y$
