Equations And Inequations Ques 192
I. $2 x^{2}+9 x+9=0$
II. $4 y^{2}+9 y+5=0$
Directions : In each of the following questions, two equations numbered I and II are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answer
(1) if $\quad x \geq y$
(2) if $x \leq y$
(3) if $x>y$
(4) if $x<y$
(5) if $x=y \quad$ or relationship between $x$ and $y$ cannot be established

Correct Answer: 192.(4)
Solution: (4) I. $2 x^{2}+9 x+9=0$ $\Rightarrow 2 x^{2}+6 x+3 x+9=0$ $\Rightarrow 2 x(x+3)+3(x+3)=0$ $\Rightarrow(x+3)(2 x+3)=0$
$\Rightarrow x=-3$ or $\frac{-3}{2}$
II. $4 y^{2}+9 y+5=0$
$\Rightarrow 4 y^{2}+4 y+5 y+5=0$
$\Rightarrow 4 y(y+1)+5(y+1)=0$
$\Rightarrow(y+1)(4 y+5)=0$
$\Rightarrow y=-1$ or $\frac{-5}{4}$
Clearly, $x<y$
