Equations And Inequations Ques 176

I. $2 x^{2}+18 x+40=0$

II. $2 y^{2}+15 y+27=0$

Directions : In the following questions, two equations I and II have been given. You have to solve both equations and give answer if

(1) $x>y$

(2) $x \geq y$

(3) $x<y$

(4) $x \leq y$

(5) $x=y$ or the relation cannot be established.

Correct Answer: 176.(5)

Solution: (5) I. $2 x^{2}+18 x+40=0$

$\Rightarrow x^{2}+9 x+20=0$

$\Rightarrow x^{2}+5 x+4 x+20=0$

$\Rightarrow x(x+5)+4(x+5)=0$

$\Rightarrow(x+4)(x+5)=0$

$\Rightarrow x=-4$ or -5

II. $2 y^{2}+15 y+27=0$

$\Rightarrow 2 y^{2}+6 y+9 y+27=0$

$\Rightarrow 2 y(y+3)+9(y+3)=0$

$\Rightarrow(2 y+9)(y+3)=0$

$\Rightarrow y=-\frac{9}{2}$ or -3
