Equations And Inequations Ques 169
I. $2 x^{2}-13 x-189=0$
II. $2 y^{2}-3 y-189=0$
Directions : In the following questions, two equations numbered I and II are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answer If
(1) $x>y$
(2) $x \geq y$
(3) $x<y$
(4) $x \leq y$
(5) $\quad x=y$ or the relationship cannot be established

Correct Answer: (1)
Solution: (1) I. $2 x^{2}-13 x-189=0$ $\Rightarrow 2 x^{2}-27 x+14 x-189=0$
$\Rightarrow x(2 x-27)+7(2 x-27)=0$
$\Rightarrow(x+7)(2 x-27)=0$
$\Rightarrow x=-7$ or $\frac{27}{2}$
II. $2 y^{2}-3 y-189=0$
$\Rightarrow 2 y^{2}-21 y+18 y-189=0$
$\Rightarrow y(2 y-21)+9(2 y-21)=0$
$\Rightarrow(y+9)(2 y-21)=0$
$\Rightarrow y=-9$ or $\frac{21}{2}$
Clearly, $x>y$
