Equations And Inequations Ques 143
I. $5 x+2 y=96$
II. $3(7 x+5 y)=489$
Directions : In the following questions two equations numbered I and II are given. You have to solve both the equations and give answer If
(1) $\quad x>y$
(2) $\quad x \geq y$
(3) $x<y$
(4) $\quad x \leq y$
(5) $\quad x=y$ or the relationship cannot be established

Correct Answer: (1)
Solution: (1) I. $5 x+2 y=96$
II. $3(7 x+5 y)=489$
$\Rightarrow 7 x+5 y=489 \div 3=163$
By equation $I \times 5-$ equation II $\times 2$,
$$ \begin{aligned} & 25 x+10 y=480 \\ & 14 x+10 y=326 \\ & -\quad-\quad- \\ & \hline 11 x=154 \quad \Rightarrow x=14 \end{aligned} $$
From equation I,
$14 \times 5+2 y=96$
$\Rightarrow 2 y=96-70=26$
$\Rightarrow y=13$
Clearly, $x>y$
