Equations And Inequations Ques 135

I. $x^{2}+14 x=-45$

II. $y^{2}-13 y=-36$

Directions : In each of the following question, there are two equations I and II given. You have to solve the equations in each question and choose the correct answer that represents appropriate relationship between the values from the codes given below:

(1) if $x>y$

(2) if $x>y$

(3) if $x<y$

(4) if $x<y$

(5) if $x=y$ or no relation can be established between $x$ and $y$.

Show Answer

Correct Answer: 135.(3)

Solution: (3) I. $x^{2}+14 x+45=0$

$\Rightarrow x^{2}+9 x+5 x+45=0$

$\Rightarrow x(x+9)+5(x+9)=0$

$\Rightarrow(x+5)(x+9)=0$

$\Rightarrow x=-5$ or -9

II. $y^{2}-13 y+36+0$

$\Rightarrow y^{2}-4 y-9 y+36=0$

$\Rightarrow y(y-4)-9(y-4)=0$

$\Rightarrow(y-4)(y-9)=0$

$\Rightarrow y=4$ or 9
