  1. An item was sold after giving a certain discount on the marked price. What was the percentage of discount given? I. The profit earned by after giving the discount is $44 %$. Had the percentage of discount been doubled the profit earned would have been $28 %$.

II. The cost price of the item is Rs. 400.

Correct Answer: 42. (3)

Solution: 42. (3) From both statements,

If the marked price be Rs. $x$ and discount be $y %$, then

$x \times(100-y) %=\frac{400 \times 144}{100}$

$\Rightarrow x(100-y)=576 \ldots . .(\mathrm{i})$

Again, $x(100-2 y)$

$=400 \times 128 \ldots .$. (ii)

On dividing equation (ii) by (i),

$\frac{100-2 y}{100-y}=\frac{400 \times 128}{576}$

Hence, value of $y$ can be determined.
