Jar A contains 78 litres of milk and water in the respective ratio of $6: 7$. 26 litres of the mixture was taken out from Jar A. What quantity of milk should be added to jar A, so that water constitutes $40 \%$ of the resultant mixture in jar A?

In remaining $(78-26)$ $=52$ litres of mixture,
Quantity of milk $=\frac{6}{13} \times 52$ $=24$ litres
Quantity of water $=\frac{7}{13} \times 52$ $=28$ litres
Let $x$ litres of milk be added.
$\therefore \frac{28}{52+x}=\frac{40}{100}$
$ \frac{28}{52+x}=\frac{2}{5}$
$\Rightarrow 104+2 x=140$
$\Rightarrow 2 x=140-104=36$
$\Rightarrow x=\frac{36}{2}=18$ litres
