Vessel A contains $x$ litre milk and vessel B contains $y$ litre water. From vessels A and B, $60 \%$ milk and $12 \%$ water were taken and mixed in vessel $C$. The respective ratio between quantities of milk and water in vessel $C$ was $25: 4$. If $x$ was 20 litre more than $y$, what is the quantity of milk in vessel C? (in litre)

Solution: (1)
According to the question, $x=y+20 \ldots$. (i)
Again,
$\frac{\frac{60x}{100}}{\frac {12y}{100}}$ $=\frac{25}{4}$
$\Rightarrow \frac{60 x}{12 y}=\frac{5 x}{y}=\frac{25}{4}$
$\Rightarrow \frac{x}{y}=\frac{5}{4} $
$\Rightarrow \frac{x}{x-20}=\frac{5}{4}$
$\Rightarrow 5 x-100=4 x$
$\Rightarrow 5 x-4 x=100 $
$\Rightarrow x=100$
$\therefore$ Quantity of milk in vessel $C=$ 60 litres.
